Tennis at the cathedral

February is the most awaited month for the city’s tennis fans: yesterday the first round of the Buenos Aires ATP was played. This cup is one of the four tournaments in the professional circuit in Latin America (together with Viña del Mar, Costa de Sauipe and Acapulco).
The tournament, called Copa Telmex due to its main sponsor, takes place from 18th through 24 of February. Its first edition was in 2001, and among its champions, there are former world’s number ones and Grand Slam winners, such as Guga Kuerten, Gastón Gaudio and Carlos Moyá.
In 2008, Argentine’s current best David Nalbandian –11 in the ATP ranking– is seeded first, while the also Argentinian Juan Monaco and Spaniard Carlos Moyá are number two and three. Among others, there are players from Italy, Brazil, France, the Czech Republic, Chile, Ecuador, Perú and other countries.
The venue of this cup is the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, considered the cathedral of Argentine tennis. This stadium holds more than 5,000 visitors. Its main court is of clay.
The Lawn Tennis, one of the most sophisticated clubs in the city, is found in the forests of Palermo, between the Campo de Golf of the city and the horse race track, in an ideal location to enjoy a walk in a sunny day.
Have you been in the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club? And in other large tennis stadiums of the world? Who is your favourite for the Copa and who would you like to see playing it?

a friend from buenos aires invited me over to the final on sunday. it was an even match of good tennis, although i had never seen so slow a surface as that court’s clay.
i liked the stadium, but use to love all tennis stadiums, and the sorroundings are gorgeus. my fav stadium is the Louis Armstrong at Flushing, NY, it used to be the central court of the US open until the also great Artur Ashe stadium was built.
