Where did you go last night?

Where did you go last night?

Porteños, wheter or not they are night life fans, accept –generally with a sort of pride– the relationship between their city and nocturnal activity. Like tango, football, the merry-go-round on the barrio square, like Avenida de Mayo or Corrientes and like the hidden river, “porteño night” is a cliché of Buenos Aires.

But it is not only a figure of speech. Night life is one of the obvious features of Buenos Aires: many bars are open until 7 am and discos are empty until three hours are passed from midnight. In Buenos Aires you can have a bife de chorizo at 3 am, after watching the 1.30 movie and before going to dance until 6, when it is time to look for an open bar, or for one that never closed*, and treat oneself to café con leche con medialunas.

  • You are going to Buenos Aires: what do you expect of the city’s night?
  • You are in Buenos Aires: what are your night circuits? Where do you start and where you finish your nights? What did you do last night?

Love Buenos Aires. Have been on vacation here with 3 friends for 2 weeks. The locals, especially students, are very friendly and more than happy to join your group for conversation and fun and going out.

We usually ask the local students where they party and then go there. In Recoleta, it appears that the locals favorite place is something called Shoeless Joe´s El Alamo.

We have been there more than once because usually our new found friends insist on going there.

A word of warning - Shoeless Joe´s El Alamo is not for everyone. It is open 24 hours everyday. It is always crowded. It is very popular. There are usually more girls than guys because girls drink for free in El Alamo.

Last night , as usual, we went to El Alamo. As usual it was crowded. Talked to a group of American guys from Texas.

This is the funny part. These Texas guys were convinced that El Alamo was some type of cover for a brothel. I guess they were not used to seeing so many gorgeous young girls in one place. In fact, they were convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that El Alamo was filled with girls of the ëasy life¨

I pointed to a group of my girlfriends who were at a table nearby. Without telling our Texas friends that I knew these girls I asked them if these girls were working girls. Absolutely, they answered. No doubt about it.

Ok,, boys, why don´t you start a conversation with them and find out what the going rate is. We were fixin to do just that - they replied.

These 4 Texans went over to our girlfriends table and started a conversation.
Didn´t pay much attention but about 5 minutes later I heard a lot of commotion and a scream nearby. My girlfriends had thrown their drinks in the guys faces. Apparently my girlfriends didn´t appreciate being asked how much their services would cost for the night.

Me Again. More news. Didn’t talk to my girlfriends for few days. When I met them again I asked them what happened at El Alamo a few nights ago with the American boys from Texas. My girlfriends said the guys were real cute and my girlfriends were hoping that they would party with them. Then the Texas boys said something that upset them - they wouldn’t tell me exactly what they said. I think I know.

Anyway, this conversation takes place in El Alamo and guess who walks in at this very moment - the Texas boys.

I join the Texas boys and tell them my girlfriends point of view. The Texas boys feel terrible. They say that they should apologize to the girls. I tell them that might not be such a good idea - the girls are pretty upset.

Nevertheless, a few minutes later the boys go over to the girls table - I guess to apologize. A few minutes they are still talking. Twenty minutes later they are still talking. About two hours later they all leave together as a group - the Texas boys and my girlfriends. I guess my girlfriends got their wish i.e. to party with the Texas boys.
