With the aim of positioning the City of Buenos Aires as the center of technology of Latin America, there was a government mission to Washington, DC and Silicon Valley to promote the Technology District and to attract investments. The delegation found a very receptive environment and obtained very important strategic contacts and binding projects.
One of the most important observations made by the delegation members is that the concept of near-shore is becoming stronger as opposed to off-shore; and thus, United States is giving much more value than in the past to the fact that we share the same time zone or the same culture with providers from other countries.
"The number of skilled resources, the amount of universities in the city of Buenos Aires as well as its broad band penetration in the population in general called the attention of the people in Washington and San Francisco", said Carlos Pirovano, Undersecretary of Investment of the Ministry of Economic Development, who led the delegation.
Tight agenda
The mission visited some companies such as Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Adobe and Cisco, among others, and they held different meetings with the National Foundation of Sciences (NFS) and San Francisco University, with the intention of learning about the programs that are being implemented with other Latin American countries and analyzing the possibility of adapting them to the strategy of the City of Buenos Aires.
There were also some meetings with the officers from Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), one of the largest networks of ICT companies in the USA, in order to get a deep knowledge of its operations and to discuss the possible fields for joint actions.
They also visited the National League of Cities in the USA in order to learn about the relation and articulation among the cities and to obtain good practices in this subject, with the intention of making a further evaluation of the possibility of incorporating Buenos Aires to the international network of cities that participate in the National League of Cities.
Besides, they also had a business breakfast at the Council of Americas where the Undersecretary of Investment of the Ministry of Economic Development, Carlos Pirovano, and the General Director of Investment Management, Alejandro Bonadeo, talked about the strategy of Economic Development of the City of Buenos Aires before the authorities of this institution, the State Department, the Argentine Embassy in the USA and some Law Firms in Washington.
The aim was to present the strategy of Economic Development of the City of Buenos Aires, with its strategic aim of positioning Buenos Aires as an attractive destination for investments.
The Buenos Aires delegation also had the opportunity of making contacts with San Francisco Major, and they presented their strategy for the ICT sector, and considered the possibility of signing an agreement between the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and San Francisco City.
The government expects to consolidate the opportunities of collaboration with most of the visited companies and organizations.
